New York Times columnist Paul Krugman’s article “When Trade Becomes A Weapon,” published October 13, cites original research by Mortara Center faculty member and former director Abraham Newman. In July 2019, Newman and Henry Farrell (Johns Hopkins University) co-authored “Weaponized Interdependence: How Global Economic Networks Shape State Coercion,” published in premier journal International Security. Krugman cites the paper’s argument that global economic conflict has shifted from trade wars to access to markets and supply chain points.
