Book Talks

Faculty Book Labs

The opportunity to have a day-long discussion of a book in draft form can be invaluable for any scholar, particularly for junior faculty members. In 2011, the Mortara Center hosted book labs for Matthew Carnes' manuscript on the labor regulation dynamics of Latin American states and for Desha Girod on her study of the relationship between post-conflict aid and development outcomes.

Faculty Book Launches

The Mortara Center sponsors book launch events featuring new Georgetown Faculty publications, which highlight the important research being done at Georgetown. The Center recently sponsored book launches for Robert Lieber, "Power & Willpower in the American Future" and Charles Kupchan, "No One's World". Recent presentations by non-Georgetown authors have included "Politics and Strategy" with Peter Trubowitz (Professor of Government at the University of Texas at Austin), "The Little Book of Terror" with Daisy Rockwell, and "The Trouble with the Congo: Local Violence and the Failure of International Peacebuilding" with Séverine Autesserre (Asssitant Professor of Political Science at Barnard College, Columbia University).

Faculty and Student Proposed Activities

The Mortara Center sponsored and co-sponsored over 100 events in 2011-2012 academic year. The Center is open to receiving ideas from faculty and students for new activities and can help finance, organize, and host such activities.
