Research Centers
Georgetown has several centers and institutes that focus their research on international development. They include:
- Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs: The Berkley Center is at the heart of a university-wide effort to make Georgetown a global leader in the interdisciplinary study of religion and its role in world affairs. The Berkeley Center works with other Georgetown centers and programs engaged in this effort and coordinates a variety programs designed to advance interreligious understanding within the Georgetown community and beyond.
- Center for Democracy and Civil Society (CDACS): The Center for Democracy and Civil Society (CDACS) was established to expand and deepen theory, research and teaching on the relationship between democratic governance and civil society. Civil society encompasses those parts of society that are neither government nor business, including associations, non-governmental organizations, non-profit organizations, advocacy groups, citizen groups, social movements, as well as the cultures, norms, and social values that enable these social phenomena.
- Institute for International Law and Politics (IILP): The Institute for International Law and Politics was established to promote teaching and research in this area of the intersection of international law and international relations. Recent developments such as the American refusal to ratify the Statue of the International Criminal Court, or the rejection of the Kyoto Agreement, or the efforts to gain particular language in a Security Council resolution on Iraq are difficult to assess in the absence of an understanding of legal rules and an appreciation of the ways in which these rules may affect behavior.
- Institute for the Study of International Migration (ISIM): The Institute for the Study of International Migration (ISIM), founded in 1998, and focuses on all aspects of international migration, including the causes of and potential responses to population movements, immigration and refugee law and policy, comparative migration studies, the integration of immigrants into their host societies, and the effects of international migration on social, economic, demographic, foreign policy and national security concerns.
- Mortara Center for International Studies: The Mortara Center for International Studies seeks to advance scholarship and inform policy by combining the expertise of scholars and the experience of international affairs practitioners to illuminate the fundamental forces — political, economic, cultural, ideological — that shape international relations. To realize this mission, the Center organizes and co-sponsors lectures, seminars, conferences and provides support for research and publications.
