Meet the MURFs: Anish Shrestha
Anish Shrestha is a member of the Class of 2028 in the School of Foreign Service, majoring in Global Business. In his time so far as a MURF, Anish has researched issues ranging from maritime chokepoints to federalism in state-nations with Professor Giordano. On campus, Anish also works as a barista at The Hilltoss and serves as an editorial assistant for the Georgetown Journal of International Affairs.
Tell us about a research project you worked on as a MURF
My favorite research project has been studying maritime chokepoints, specifically understanding the implications of restrictions on international trade flows of agricultural goods through maritime chokepoints. Moreover, we were interested in whether there was a correlation between an increase in food prices resulting from the chokepoint restriction and a subsequent rise in political instability. Since I had taken Maps of the Modern World with Professor Giordano, I was incredibly fascinated by the opportunity to build upon what I learned in class. After conducting a literature review, I found insufficient evidence to suggest a correlation; nonetheless, the subject matter and literature were intellectually stimulating. However, more recently, I have decided to revisit my inquiry into maritime chokepoints and am excited to see where I can take my research now.
What is one skill you’ve gained from your participation in the MURF program?
Data visualization. Throughout my time as a MURF, I have learned to effectively visualize trade data through graphs, maps, and charts using Datawrapper and GIS. Beyond learning how to use valuable data visualization tools like Datawrapper and GIS, I have learned to understand what message or narrative the data is telling, and how to convey that message through a graphic.
What advice would you give to students considering the MURF program?
Utilize your faculty mentor and maintain a strong relationship with them. By regularly scheduling check-in meetings with your professor, you can receive valuable feedback and input on your work. If you intend to apply, be sure to find a faculty mentor with whom you can imagine collaborating over the next four years. Professor Giordano has been invaluable to my experience so far, and I am grateful for his guidance and advice.
What do you enjoy doing outside of the MURF program?
I love watching the Premier League and my club, Tottenham Hotspur. I also enjoy working out and photography. In my free time, I like to explore new restaurants and museums with friends in D.C.
