The Industrial Policy and Geopolitical Turn in Markets

European Industrial Policy & the New Geopolitics of Markets Workshop

In April 2023, GPEP Co-director Kate McNamara, together with Catherine Hoeffler (Sciences Po Bordeaux) and Frédéric Mérand (University of Montreal), organized a two-day workshop on “European industrial policy & the new geopolitics of markets” at the Robert Schuman Centre at the European University Institute in Fiesole, Italy. At the workshop, participants presented short memos and discussed the resurgence of overt market interventions around decarbonization, technology, and national security, something that was largely taboo during the last three decades of neoliberal politics. This workshop centered on the European Union’s emergent industrial policy while situating it within the broader changes towards a more geopolitical global economy. The goals of the workshop were to take stock of what we know, set out a research agenda, and note some of the key policy challenges the resurgence of industrial policy and geoeconomics is creating.

This workshop was made possible by funding from the Hewlett Foundations’s Economy & Society Initiative.

The workshop informed research by Professor McNamara on “Transforming Europe? The EU’s industrial policy and geopolitical turn,” which was subsequently published at the Journal of European Public Policy.
