Georgetown University Professor of Political Science Dr. Ken Opalo has written a new paper on the Legacies of Colonial Institutions in which he explores the long term institutional effects of colonialism. Dr. Opalo believes that in order to measure the true impacts of colonialism on legislative institutions, we must refrain from broad generalizations and instead examine the individual historical cases that we seek to define together. Through the case studies of Kenya and Ghana, and analysis of the relevant statistics and narratives, Dr. Opalo concludes that the methods of assessing contemporary legislative institutions can only be cautiously applied to their colonial counterparts. Dr. Opalo’s work has been supported in part by the Mortara Center.
